In this study, we use micro-particle image velocimetry (µ-PIV) and adapt a commercial birefringence microscopy system for making full-field, quantitative measurements of flow-induced birefringence (FIB) for the purpose of microfluidic, opticalrheometry of two worm-like micellar solutions. In combination with conventional rheometric techniques, we use our microfluidic rheometer to study the properties of a shear-banding solution of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) with sodium salicylate (NaSal) and a nominally shear thinning system of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with NaSal across many orders of magnitude of deformation rates (10 −2 ≤γ ≤ 10 4 s −1 ). We use µ-PIV to quantify the local kinematics and use the birefringence microscopy system in order to obtain high-resolution measurements of the changes in molecular orientation in the worm-like fluids under strong deformations in a microchannel. The FIB measurements reveal that the CPyCl system exhibits regions of localized, high optical anisotropy indicative of shear bands near the channel walls, whereas the birefringence in the shear-thinning CTAB system varies more smoothly across the width of the channel as the volumetric flow rate is increased. We compare the experimental results to the predictions of a simple constitutive model, and we document the break-down in the stress optical rule as the characteristic rate of deformation is increased.

Abstract:We have evaluated the electric characteristics of an organic surfactant material, n-Cethyl-trimethyl-ammonium Bromide (C 16 TAB) to fabricate the p-n homo-junction. This C 16 TAB was dissolved in the pure water, where the potassium iodide (KI) was added. The impurities adaptation has been processed in this mixed solution with the application of voltage. The KI is ionized in the water and the potassium ion is moved to the negative electrode and the iodine ion to the positive electrode. We collected the solution in the vicinity of both electrodes separately, and dried it to fabricate the samples. We measured the resistivities of both samples which were in the range of 10 +3 Ωcm. Both materials were contacted, and we measured the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. We have obtained the I-V characteristics similar to a p-n homo-junction.

Wormlike micelle surfactant solutions showed turbulent drag reduction effects in pipe flows. It was well-known that SIS (Shear Induced Structure), reported in previous studies, made them. However, inner diameters (characteristic length) of pipes used in the previous studies were in the order of millimeter. Thus, shear rates were limited to the order of 10 4 s −1 at a maximum. In the present study, flow properties of water and wormlike micelle surfactant solutions were investigated at higher shear rates using capillaries whose inner diameters ranged from 133 µm to 2.87 mm. Because the observed Reynolds number estimated for the micron-sized capillaries ranged from 10 2 to 10 4 , drag reduction effects were observed as a pseudo-laminarization, which is a phenomenon that transition from laminar flows to turbulent flows with the increase in the Reynolds number delays. Viscosity measurements using a capillary method indicated that the surfactant solution used in the present study had non-Newtonian viscosity. Therefore, the Reynolds number of the surfactant solution flow was estimated by the generalized Reynolds number. By using a jet thrust method, elastic properties of wormlike micelle surfactant solutions were measured in the corresponding to the viscosity measurement. For water, the resultant pressure drops (the frictional coefficient of pipes) agreed with both the prediction of laminar flows and the Blasius expression.diameters. In other words, these results suggested that the pseudo-laminarization was occurred in the capillary flows. Moreover, the relationship between the shear rate at which the surfactant viscosity asymptotically approached to the water one and the transition to turbulent flows was discussed to clarify their correlation.
