Rhabdomyolysis, Myoglobinuria and Hyperpyrexia Caused by Suxamethonium in a Child With Increased Serum Creatine Kinase Concentrations

Abstract: Rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria, hyperpyrexia, muscle weakness and stiffness occurred in a 4-yr-old boy after halothane anaesthesia and a single dose of suxamethonium. Neurological examination of the patient and his mother revealed no physical abnormality although in both the serum creatine kinase and lactic dehydrogenase concentrations were increased. McArdle's disease was excluded by a normal response to an ischaemic work test.Apparently normal individuals may show minimal signs of muscle destruction following… Show more

“…Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria were diagnosed five hours after anaesthesia, when the patient voided dark brown urine and showed muscle weakness. 12 The third patient (the present case) had still not regained consciousness one hour after anaesthesia, his limbs were extended, he showed tachycardia and was unusually warm.…”

“…In the treatment group, total fasciculation score was 32, out of a maximum possible score of 80. The increase in mean myoglobin values above pre-induction values were 2.6 &litre, 6.8 pg/litre and 10.6 pg/litre at 5 , 10 and 20 minutes respectively. The only significant increase compared to pre-induction levels (p c 0.05.…”
