rf measurements and tuning of the 750 MHz radio frequency quadrupole

Abstract: In the framework of the program on medical applications a compact 750 MHz RFQ has been designed and built to be used as an injector for a hadron therapy linac. This RFQ was designed to accelerate protons to an energy of 5 MeV within only 2 m length. It is divided into four segments and equipped with 32 tuners in total. The length of the RFQ corresponds to 5λ which is considered to be close to the limit for field adjustment using only piston tuners. Moreover the high frequency, which is about double the frequen… Show more

“…Both methodology and choices of the rf design of the four-vane Carbon-RFQ were adapted from the HF-RFQ [7][8][9][10][11] and PIXE-RFQ [9,[12][13][14]-the obvious exception being the novel dipole mode detuning discussed in Section III A. Here, we summarize the remaining rf design considerations, including cavity geometry (Section IV A), maximum surface electric field (Section IV B), auxiliaries and power couplers (IV C), and thermal simulations (IV D).…”

“…After successful design, construction, and commissioning of the HF-RFQ, a compact 750 MHz radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) for medical applications [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], CERN initiated the development of a new RFQ operating at this high frequency in mid-2017. The so-called PIXE-RFQ [3,[8][9][10][11] will accelerate protons to 2 MeV over a length of one meter only.…”
