RF breast cancer detection employing a noncharacterized vivaldi antenna and a MUSIC-inspired algorithm

Abstract: A novel microwave breast cancer detection system consisting of an Evolutionary Global Optimized Vivaldi antenna and an algorithm inspired by MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) is presented. Its performance is assessed by using a simplified numerical breast phantom for a number of critical conditions including the presence of fibroglandular tissues.

“…Nearfield electromagnetic imaging (EMI) using energy in radio and microwave frequency ranges is an attractive research topic in various disciplines, particularly in the biomedical fields [1][2][3][4]. The contrast in dielectric properties for cancerous and surrounding healthy tissues have been used for tumor detection in applications such as breast imaging [1][2][3].…”

“…Vivaldi antenna proposed by Gibson exhibits attractive features such as wideband, directional radiation, geometric simplicity, conformal installation, light weight, and ease of fabrication . They have been widely applied in biomedical imaging system, radar, wireless communication, and radio telescope . Vivaldi antenna operates as a resonant radiator at low frequencies whereas as traveling wave antenna at high frequencies.…”

“…The detection of a 5-mm diameter tumor was evaluated through a printed monopole antenna that scanned the phantom in a mono-static radar configuration. Measurements are processed through three different linear non-coherent detection techniques such as migration [5], Wide Band Multiple Signal Classification, MUSIC [6] and Interferometric MUSIC [7]. The resultant reconstructions are compared and evaluated in terms of Full-Width-Half-Maximum, FWHM, Signal-toClutter Ratio, SCR, Signal-to-Mean Ratio, SMR, and Spatial displacement, SD.…”
