Rey auditory-verbal learning test: Structure of a modified German version

Abstract: The Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) is widely used in scientific research as well as in clinical practice. But there exists little research on the structure of the AVLT. We investigated the structure of a German version of the AVLT and VLMT, in 232 patients of a psychiatric clinic and in 872 patients of an epileptologic clinic. First we stated a theoretical LISREL model relating the observed variables of the VLMT to short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) as latent variables. Then we estimated … Show more

“…Accordingly, the two screening instruments showed a strong correlation, highlighting the distinction between their constructs and those measured by the RAVLT. The factor structure of the RAVLT in the studied population is consistent with the one found in the literature 15,16 . In healthy elderly, with the sociodemographic profile of this study, a two-factor structure was sufficient to explain more than half of the variance presented in the test.…”

“…Its factorial structure, however, is heterogeneous and dependent on the studied population. In clinical groups of patients with epilepsy or psychiatric disorders 15 the test tends to show a bi-factorial model, with a component related to short-term memory and the other to long-term memory. It is usually found two or three factors in the general population: short-term memory, long-term memory and recognition memory 16 .…”

“…Verbal memory was assessed with a German version of Rey's auditory verbal learning test 24,25 (the sum of the correct words in the fi rst fi ve runs, the number of words correct in the fi rst recall of the fi rst run, and the number of words correct in the second word list gave the score for short-term verbal memory abilities). The results of a postinterference recall trial were analysed to measure retroactive interference.…”

“…Verbal memory was assessed with a German version of Rey's auditory verbal learning test (RAVLT, correct words of all runs were summed up) [14,15]. Forward and backward digit span were assessed with the Wechsler adult intelligence scale and were analysed separately [16].…”
