Rewilding the tropics, and other conservation translocations strategies in the tropicalAsia‐Pacific region

Abstract: Alarm over the prospects for survival of species in a rapidly changing world has encouraged discussion of translocation conservation strategies that move beyond the focus of ‘at-risk’ species. These approaches consider larger spatial and temporal scales than customary, with the aim of recreating functioning ecosystems through a combination of large-scale ecological restoration and species introductions. The term ‘rewilding’ has come to apply to this large-scale ecosystem restoration program. While reintroducti… Show more

“…There is potential that top-down management actions, such as encouraging or re-establishing apex carnivores that are currently persecuted or otherwise threatened, could be a useful means of increasing tree recruitment, through suppression of mammalian herbivores (Ripple et al 2014). Other forms of 'rewilding', involving seed dispersers or herbivores, also have a role to play in managing revegetation trajectories (Louys et al 2014;Galetti et al 2017). These ideas provide a fertile topic for future research and experimentation in sites undergoing vegetation restoration following retirement from agricultural uses.…”

“…Here, we suggest a list of potential candidates for trophic rewilding for Atlantic Forest (Table 1; Fig. 1), but other authors have been discussing for other ecosystems (Louys et al 2014, Sandom et al 2013, Corlett 2016. For each species, the expected ecological benefits must be weighed locally against the ecological and economic risks and the chances of failure, but continuous monitoring is necessary.…”
