“…Among those, asphaltenes are the one insoluble in n -alkanes, such as n -heptane or n -pentane, and are soluble in toluene. Asphaltenes obtained using pentane is C 5 -asphaltenes, and the one using heptane is C 7 -asphaltenes. The difference between these two asphaltene outcomes is that pentane precipitates out part of resins, which are also known to alter surface wettability due to its polarity, but not as much as asphaltenes. , IP 143 or ASTM D2007 are commonly used standard methods to separate asphaltenes from crude oil. , Maltenes used in this study were kindly provided by O. Mullins at Schlumberger-Doll Research Center. They followed these standard protocols to remove the C 7 -asphaltenes, which do not contain resins, by mixing n -heptane with Kuwait UG8 crude oil, and the n -heptane solvent was then evaporated to obtain the maltene fraction.…”
