Revisiting Quasi-periodic Modulation in γ-Ray Blazar PKS 2155-304 with Fermi Pass 8 Data

Abstract: We examine the gamma-ray quasi-periodic variability of PKS 2155-304 with the latest publicly available Fermi -LAT Pass 8 data which covers the years from 2008 August to 2016 October. We produce the light curves in two ways, i.e., the exposure-weighted aperture photometry and the maximum likelihood optimization. The light curves are then analyzed by using Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ); and the results reveal a significant quasi-periodicity with a period of 1.74 ± 0.13 yea… Show more

“…Possible γ-ray QPOs have been reported for several blazars (e.g., Sandrinelli et al 2014;Ackermann et al 2015;Sandrinelli et al 2016aSandrinelli et al , 2016bSandrinelli et al , 2017Zhang et al 2017aZhang et al , 2017b. However, the significance of the claimed QPOs is not very high.…”

“…In PKS 2155-304, the periods of optical and γ-ray quasi-periodic variabilities are different (Sandrinelli et al 2014). In PKS 0426-380, no optical quasi-periodic variability is found (Zhang et al 2017b). The lack of optical and X-ray quasi-periodic variabilities may be because the optical/X-ray and γ-ray emissions originate from different regions.…”

“…However, in AGNs, the periodicity is relatively rare. Some detections or evidences for periodic variabilities in optical, X-ray, and/or gamma-ray emission of AGN have been reported in the literature (Kidger et al 1992;Valtonen et al 2006;Ackermann et al 2015;Reis et al 2012;Zhang et al 2017a;Covino et al 2017). In X-rays, a significant transient QPO has been detected in NLS1 galaxy RE J1034+396 (Gierliński et al 2008).…”
