Revisiting Photovoice: Perceptions of Dementia Among Researchers With Intellectual Disability

Abstract: There is limited global evidence exploring perceptions of dementia among people with intellectual disabilities. This article presents findings from the first known study where an inclusive research team, including members with intellectual disability, used photovoice methodology to visually represent views of people with intellectual disabilities and dementia. Drawing on Freire’s empowerment pedagogy, the study aims were consistent with global photovoice aims: enabling people to visually record critical dialog… Show more

“…Photovoice methodology has led to new learning about dementia from the perspective of people with intellectual disabilities, findings that are already influencing practice (Watchman, Mattheys, Doyle, Boustead, & Rincones, 2020). New findings include co‐researcher's reflection on their own perceptions of dementia including impact on relationships and the fear of a return to institutional care.…”

“…In taking a person-centered approach, the rights and views of the participants were prioritized throughout this study. This is in line with demands for a commitment and focus among non-disabled researchers toward genuine engagement, rethinking research relationships, inclusive design, and an empowered voice for people with intellectual disabilities (Watchman et al, 2020). It has benefited the research through development of methodological tools and integration of analysis.…”

“…The total data set used for analysis included seven interviews which ranged from 44 to 110 minutes with a total of 70 accompanying photographs. We deemed this to be sufficient data for our purpose as it provided a rich analysis with which to answer our research question (Braun & Clarke, 2019) and is consistent with similarly conducted studies (e.g., Fleury et al, 2009;Kantrowitz-Gordon & Vandermause, 2016;Watchman et al, 2020;Wheeler & Early, 2018). Analysis was conducted inductively, both independently and collectively through weekly meetings and discussions.…”
