“…In our study, the median length of stay was 8 days, a result consistent with the literature Wong et al, 2010). Additionally, as BI score decreased, LOS increased, as confirmed by previous studies that used the BI (Supervía et al, 2008;Tucker et al, 2017;Wong et al, 2010) and by others who instead used other scales for functional assessment (Campbell et al, 2005;Dagani et al, 2013;Grant et al, 2014;Kwok et al, 2012;Ozyemisci-Taskiran et al, 2011). Reduced LOS may lead to both better clinical and economic outcomes by lowering the risk of iatrogenic complications (Basic & Khoo, 2009).…”

“…However, functional dependence increases costs related to the length of hospitalization, personnel for helping those people in their ADL, and in resources for avoiding pressure ulcers. Length of stay, for example, is one of the most important factors contributing to the increase in healthcare spending (Kwok et al., 2012; Ozyemisci‐Taskiran et al., 2011) and it is desirable to reduce it. Other studies have already shown that diagnosis and medical interventions alone have a limited ability to predict hospital outcomes in the older population and fail to reflect comorbidities and additional measures of physical functioning (Espallargues et al., 2008; Wong et al., 2010).…”

“…Gariballa et al, 1998a; "Poor nutritional status on admission predicts poor outcomes after stroke: observational data from the FOOD trial," 2003) and length of stay (Finestone et al, 1996) in stroke rehabilitation and acute care patients; however, an assessment of inflammation was not performed in the studies making these claims. As a study by Ozyemisci-Taskiran et al demonstrated that infections (in addition to admission motor impairment) affected length of stay in stroke rehabilitation patients (Ozyemisci-Taskiran, Gunendi, Aknar, Karatas, & Sepici, 2011), the importance of inflammation on this outcome measure is more clearly established. In the study described here, as neither improvement in a nutritional measure nor adequate nutritional intake universally corresponded to decreases in complications or length of stay while worsening of an inflammatory marker did correspond to increases in complications and length of stay, we must disagree with the studies linking malnutrition to poor performance in these outcome measures in the stroke patient.…”
