Revisiting Amniotic Band Sequence: A Wide Spectrum of Manifestations

Abstract: Objective: To describe the spectrum of clinical deformities related to amniotic band sequence (ABS), ranging from mild to severe. Methods: Retrospective evaluation of 9 cases of ABS managed during a 4-year period (February 2006 to April 2010) in a tertiary hospital. Results: The median gestational age at prenatal diagnosis was 15 weeks (range 11-26). Only 2 patients had clinical prenatal evidence of amnion rupture. In the other 5 cases the diagnosis of ABS was established prenatally based on fetal structural a… Show more

“…10 On the other hand, amniotic band sequence contains a wide spectrum of deformities ranging from minor limb and digital defects to life-threatening anomalies, such as neural tube defects and LBWC. 1 Our case can be considered as a part of this spectrum considering some defects, such as involving lower extremities, scoliosis and facial cleft. Despite the similarity of the etiopathogenesis and structural anomalies, we can conclude that our case is not LBWC, because of the absence of thoracoabdominal defects or spina bifida.…”

“…In early gestation, the mesodermal bands caused by an amniotic rupture forms and attaches to the fetal structures, an estimated process that is thought to cause the LBWC . “…It is thought that the most severe defects (ie, craniofacial and visceral) result from amnion rupture within the first 45 days of life (71). Craniofacial abnormalities include atypical encephalocele and facial cleft, and limb defects range from constriction bands to amputation; both abdominoschisis and thoracoschisis have been described (72).…”
