Revision of the Pocket Mice of the Genus Perognathus

Abstract

In this early paper certain fundamental points in the history and synonym of the group were for the first time cleared up and the number of known forms was increased from 6 to 21. Five years later the rapid growth of the Biological Survey's collections enabled me to publish descriptions of a dozen additional species and to undertake a new revision of the group, which was brought down to date in 1896. The publication of this revision, with its accompany ing illustrations, and colored maps showing the distribution of the various species, was deferred in order to obtain additional material still needed to settle a few remaining questions of distribution and relationship. This material was subsequently obtained, bringing the total number of specimens available up to 3,000; and my assistant, Mr. Osgood, to whom I had referred certain unsolved problems, undertook to bring the study of the whole group down to date. Diversification of the Perognathus flavus species group in emerging arid grasslands of western North America

“…Osgood (1900) placed extant species of Perognathus into 1 of 3 species groups, but 1 of his groups later was separated into the fasciatus and flavus groups by Williams (1978). Williams (1978) further proposed that ancestral Perognathus split initially into northern (parvus and fasciatus) and southern (flavus and longimembris) clades.…”

Phylogeography and subspecies revision of the hispid pocket mouse,Chaetodipus hispidus(Rodentia: Heteromyidae)

“…More than 60 years ago, Glass (1947) addressed morphological and geographic variation within C. hispidus in light of its long taxonomic history: since the original description in 1858, 7 different names have been proposed for populations of this species (e.g., Allen 1894;Elliot 1903;Merriam 1889;Osgood 1900). Glass (1947) examined 377 specimens and concluded that 4 subspecies should be recognized even though there was often extensive morphological intergradation among C. h. hispidus, C. h. paradoxus, and C. h. spilotus (C. h. zacatecae was not examined rigorously in his study due to a lack of material).…”
