Revision of the Neotropical species of the caddisfly genus Wormaldia McLachlan (Trichoptera: Philopotamidae)

Abstract: Wormaldia McLachlan 1865 is the 2nd largest genus in the family Philopotamidae (Trichoptera) after Chimarra Stephens 1829 and is diverse and widely distributed, with ca. 175 extant species in all biogeographic regions except the Australasian. In this monograph, 14 previously described species are recognized for the Neotropical region: W. alicia Bueno-Soria, Santiago-Fragoso, & Barba-Alvarez 2005 [Mexico]; W. arizonensis (Ling 1938) [Mexico, USA]; W. cornuta Bueno-Soria & Holzenthal1986 [Mexico]; W. dampfi Ross… Show more

“…Despite the variation of W.imbrialis , from others in the prolixa group listed above and defined by Muñoz-Quesada and Holzenthal (2015), we note additional characters that indicate its probable inclusion in the group. All four species have similarities of tergum X and also similarities in the apical segment of the inferior appendage, including both its shape and accompanying elongate patch of short, spine-like setae.…”

“…The Central and South American species of the genus agree in general form with other species in the genus (Muñoz-Quesada and Holzenthal 2015). Wormaldia was treated comprehensively by Ross (1956), who recognized two subgenera, Wormaldia and Doloclanes and a single isolated species from the Philippines, W.recta Ulmer.…”

“…Most of the Philopotaminae genera have relatively restricted distribution . Five genera are recorded in Neotropical region: Wormaldia McLachlan (1865), with about 200 species in all biogeographic regions except Australasian (50 of them occur in Neotropics); Hydrobiosella Tillyard (1924), with about 30 species in Australasia and one species from the Andes of Ecuador; the monotypic Aymaradella Holzenthal, Blahnik & Ríos-Touma (2018), restricted to the Bolivian Andes; Sortosa Navás (1918), with 20 extant species restricted to southern Chile and adjacent regions of Argentina; and Alterosa Blahnik (2005), endemic to Brazil with 39 described species (Blahnik, 2005;Muñoz-Quesada & Holzenthal, 2015;Holzenthal & Calor, 2017;Holzenthal et al, 2018).…”
