Revision of the Neotropical genus Acanthoscelio (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae)

Abstract: The Holarctic Scopula cajanderi (Herz) species group is revised on the basis of external and genitalic characters. The taxa included in the species group are Scopula cajanderi (Herz, 1903 [not 19041) (= the Palaearctic Scopula elwesi sajanensis Prout, I935 syn.nov., = the Palaearctic Scopula elwesi achlyoides Prout, 1935 syn.nov., = the Nearctic Scopula septentrionicola McDunnough, 1939 syn.nov.), thus making S. cajanderi Holarctic; Scopula mustangensis Yazaki, 1995; and Scopula aegrefasciata sp.nov. “…Intraspecific variation in color appears to be quite common in Scelioninae, including variation between individuals of the same sex. For example, in several species of Acanthoscelio ( Dotseth and Johnson 2001 ) and in Pseudoheptascelio rex ( Johnson and Musetti 2011 ) the mesosoma varies from orange to entirely black. In addition to the typical BOB 0 pattern and the 11 variations illustrated in Fig.…”

“…For example, among Hymenoptera, many species of Scelioninae, Tetrastichinae and Eulophinae show a recurring color pattern of a black head, orange mesosoma, and black metasoma [ 7 ]. In several species of Scelioninae, variation between individuals of the same sex appears to be quite common, with the mesosoma varying from orange to entirely black [ 8 , 9 ]. Additionally, some Ichneumonidae species show intraspecific variation, for example, in females where the mesoscutum varies from entirely orange to almost entirely black [ 10 ].…”
