“…Adults usually occur below 100-200 m (some at depths greater than 3000 m), while juveniles occur in shallow oceanic waters. The group includes five genera and c. 61 valid species (Kotlyar, 2004b(Kotlyar, , 2005(Kotlyar, , 2010(Kotlyar, , 2011a(Kotlyar, , b, 2012a(Kotlyar, , b, 2013, four of which [Melamphaes simus Ebeling 1962, Poromitra crassiceps (Günther 1878), Poromitra capito Goode & Bean 1883 and Scopelogadus mizolepis (Günther 1878)] have been previously reported off Brazil (Günther, 1878;Campos et al, 2008;Kotlyar, 2008a;Costa & Mincarone, 2010). The findings from this study indicate that records of two of those species are actually invalid, but four additional species of the family are reported here for the first time in the region.…”
