Revision of the cultural chronology of precolonial Puerto Rico: A Bayesian approach

Abstract: Puerto Rico has played a pivotal role in the building of cultural chronology for the insular Caribbean, and yet little systematic work has been conducted in recent decades to assess the validity of the system(s) produced. To resolve this issue, we assembled a radiocarbon inventory comprised of more than a thousand assays, drawn from both published sources and grey literature, which was used to assess and revise (as necessary) the received cultural chronology of Puerto Rico. “…Both uncalibrated and calibrated radiocarbon dates for B1, B2, B3, and B4 are presented in Table 5, with calibrated ranges illustrated in Fig 4 . Based on these results, the Ortiz burials are, at present, the oldest directly dated human burials from the island of Puerto Rico. Reniel Rodrı ´guez Ramos' exhaustive database of radiocarbon assays from both published sources and unpublished CRM reports includes some 243 other human bone dates from sites across the island [116]. Of these, only three have uncalibrated radiocarbon dates older than 1600 rcybp.…”
