Revision of the Crematogaster ranavalonae-group in Asia, with description of two new species (Hymenoptera, Formicidae)

Abstract: The Asian members of the Crematogaster ranavalonae-group are revised and twelve species, including two new species, C. hashimi sp. n. and C. imperfecta sp. n. are recognized. The members are distinguished from the other Asian Crematogaster in having smooth, shiny bodies with short appressed setae on the surface. Crematogaster sikkimensis Forel, 1904 is raised to the species level, and the following new synonyms are established: C. aberrans Forel, 1892 = C. aberrans assmuthi Forel, 1913, syn. n. = C. aberrans i… Show more

“…is found in different tropical regions of the world and in the Neotropical region (Blaimer, 2012b). Its numerous species are generalist fodders, forming small colonies under the loose bark of trees or in dry wood (Hosoishi, 2015). Linepithema humile is found nesting under fallen and partially excavated logs.…”

“…Despite the remarkable diversity, ecological importance, and often high local abundance of the genus, it is one of the most taxonomically neglected hyper-diverse ant genera. Presently, the taxonomic situation is only moderate to satisfactory for a few regions, such as North America (Buren 1959; 1968), Costa Rica (Longino 2003), Madagascar (e.g., Blaimer 2010; 2012b; c), and parts of South East Asia (e.g., Hosoishi and Ogata 2008; 2009; 2015; 2017). However, apart from these, for most other regions, the taxonomy is in a very poor state, without modern revisionary treatments that cleared the taxonomic chaos from the 19 th and early 20 th century.…”
