Revision of Garthiella Titgen, 1986 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Xanthidae), with description of a new subfamily and a new species from the central Philippines

Abstract: Examination of the holotype and other specimens of the type species of Garthiella Titgen, 1986, G. aberrans (Rathbun,1906), reveals that this genus must be excluded from Chlorodiellinae Ng & Holthuis, 2007, due to the absence of thediagnostic morphological features of the subfamily such as spoon-tipped chelae, prominent dactylo-propodal locks on theambulatory legs, and subdistal teeth on the ambulatory dactyli. Garthiellinae subfam. nov. is therefore established for thisgenus, as molecular and morphologica… Show more

“…This resulted in a number of new character suites being uncovered, which allowed many of the groups to be redefined to better reflect natural groupings (e.g. Mendoza & Guinot ; Mendoza & Manuel‐Santos ). Although recent systematic reviews have increased subdivision within the taxa formerly attributed to the superfamily Xanthoidea (Guinot ; Serène ; Martin & Davis ; Davie ; Števčić ; Karasawa & Schweitzer ; Ng et al .…”

“…Cymo , Cymoinae; Leptodius , Xanthinae; Etisus , Etisinae; Kraussia , Kraussiinae; and Garthiella , Garthiellinae) (Ng et al . ; Mendoza & Manuel‐Santos ). Furthermore, the closest relatives of Chlorodiellinae, namely Etisinae, are polyphyletic and defined by morphological characters of doubtful homology, making generic assignment based on common ancestry difficult (Ng et al .…”
