Abstract:Introduction There has been conclusive evidence that defunctioning stoma with either transverse colostomy or ileostomy mitigates the serious consequences of anastomotic leakage. However, whether transverse colostomy or ileostomy is preferred for defunctioning a rectal anastomosis remains controversial.
