Revised conodont stratigraphy of the Cellon section (Silurian, Carnic Alps)

Abstract: The Cellon section, located in the Carnic Alps, is a reference section for the Silurian of the world. The conodont association of the section is revised according to the most recent taxonomy and the biostratigraphy updated in the basis of the recently published zonation schemes. Seventy taxa (species and subspecies) belonging to 23 genera have been identified, allowing the discrimination of fifteen biozones from the upper Llandovery to the end of the Pridoli. However, some of the uppermost Llandovery and Wenlo… Show more

“…This is, for example, also the case of the classic Silurian Cellon section where the newly suggested Homerian zones (Oz. b. longa and K. o. absidata) are missing because of a gap and/or large condensation (see Corradini et al 2014). On that account, before worldwide acceptance, there is an urgent need to verify the application of the Baltic conodont zonation in other areas outside northeastern Europe.…”

“…Such shallow facies dominated by the microbial carbonate factory are rich in hiatuses, often cryptic, and the paucity of fauna renders correlations almost impossible. These difficulties are reflected in the diversity of conodont zonations proposed for the middle Silurian (summarized in Corradini et al, 2015). What is more, specialist shallow-water conodonts are also poorly characterized morphologically and new taxa are commonly described based on small collections from isolated localities (e.g.…”
