Reviewing the Treatment of Uncertainty in Hydro-economic Modeling of the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia

Abstract: Hydro-economic modeling is the combination of economic principles and hydrological modeling to achieve a more integrated representation of water resource management. In the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB), hydro-economic modeling has been widely used to analyze and inform basin-wide water policy. A growing but uneven literature base has prompted this review of MDB hydro-economic studies published over the past three decades to identify innovations and avenues for advancement. We focus particularly on the treatment … Show more

“…These interactions are captured at a level of temporal detail that expands the range of questions that can be addressed by both economists and hydrologists beyond those that can be analyzed using these models individually. However, it is necessary to consider the uncertainty intrinsic in these models, such as the uncertainty associated with the empirical relationships between variables and the uncertainty of the assumptions (Settre et al, 2016). These uncertainties might be compounded when these models are coupled, but some uncertainty could be removed since assumptions may be better informed using this framework.…”

“…Nevertheless, the interdependency of regions is important to consider when addressing local questions so a multi-regional analysis that spans multiple watersheds may reveal additional information about the impacts of future residential development that could occur in Fauquier County. It is also important to acknowledge the uncertainty that is inherent in the individual models, such as the uncertainty associated with assumptions and with the causal relationships between variables [44]. When coupling these models, the uncertainties might be compounded, but it is also possible that some uncertainty will be removed because assumptions are better informed.…”

“…Due to the conjunction of hydrological and economic components, HEMs are prone to data and input-parameter uncertainty from both the physical side of water availability as well as the socio-economic side of data demand and its complex interlinkages [95]. Even in the absence of relevant CC effects, the physical availability of water itself is highly uncertain in nature due to short-term weather variations and upstream water extractions by other water users.…”
