Background Fungal stem end rot disease of pitaya caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the most destructive diseases in Binh Thuan province, Vietnam. This study aimed to assess the antagonistic effects of some endophytic bacteria isolated from the weed plant (Echinochloa colonum) against A. alternata. Results A total of 19 endophytic bacteria were isolated and 5 of them presented in vitro antagonistic activity against A. alternata. Of five, strain EC80 significantly inhibited the pathogenic growth with a mean inhibition diameter of 11.88 ± 0.08 mm, while the other four (C79, EC83, EC90, and EC97) showed a weak inhibition. Interestingly, the combination of EC79 and EC80 reduced more biomass of pathogenic fungi than the single one did. EC79 showed positive results for amylase, indole acetic acid (IAA), and biofilm production, whereas EC80 presented positive capabilities for IAA and biofilm production and a negative one for amylase production. In addition, the combined filtrate of EC79 and EC80 presented non-antifungal activity on biocontrol tests in vitro, indicating that bacteria cells played a role in defending against the pathogen. Moreover, both isolates EC79 and EC80 significantly increased seedling biomass than the control. Conclusions The results suggest that those two strains in combination had the potential to be used as a biocontrol agent against A. alternata. More studies should be done in the future to evaluate their efficiency under the field conditions.

La fijación biológica de nitrógeno (FBN) es un proceso importante para la fertilidad del suelo y su microbiología. En pasturas tropicales influye en el consumo de proteína durante el proceso de pastoreo. Teniendo en cuenta esta condición, se llevó a cabo una revisión de diferentes documentos con el objeto de exponer la importancia de las bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno como microorganismos valiosos para la producción bovina y presentar información inherente a la relación entre estas, el nitrógeno, la producción vegetal y animal, así como su importancia ecológica. Se consultaron 679 documentos obtenidos de diferentes plataformas de búsqueda, que se adquirieron mediante 12 ecuaciones de exploración o combinaciones de palabras clave, seleccionando 86 documentos, de los cuales 37 fueron artículos de investigación, 26 artículos de revisión, 18 tesis y 5 libros académicos, cuya información se organizó de forma clara con el fin de evidenciar la importancia que tienen las bacterias en el aprovechamiento del nitrógeno en pasturas.

Background Stem end rot (SER) disease caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the main fungal diseases in pitaya and other crops in Nam Dinh, Vietnam, that leads to extensive yield and economic losses. Biocontrol of SER, using endophytic bacteria, is environmentally friendly and compatible with other control measures. Hence, it is emerging as an alternative disease management strategy in sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to screen antagonistic bacteria isolated from the weed, Eleusine indica, with the potential to manage SER. Results A total of 16 endophytes were isolated from the stems, leaves, and roots of the weed, E. indica. Of those, 6 strains presented antagonistic effects against A. alternata growth, and one isolate, EI-15, showed a significant inhibitory effect on SER. In addition, analyzing the 16S rDNA sequence indicated that EI-15 was a strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Moreover, the results of the antagonistic spectrum assay showed that EI-15 significantly inhibited some plant and fruit tree pathogens, especially the suppression of A. alternata. Notably, the culture filtrate of strain EI-15 exhibited in vitro apparent activity against A. alternata. Furthermore, an in vivo antagonistic experiment of EI-15 on pitaya twig showed a significant reduction of lesion on twigs than the control. Conclusions Overall, this study suggested the potential application of the EI-15 strain as a biological agent and needs to be further studied in the field to control SER.
