Review: Synthetic methodologies in siloxanes

Abstract: This review describes the various types and synthetic strategies for the production of siloxanes. A description is given of the various synthetic methods for the production of organic compounds with silicon-oxygen bonds. The different types of siloxane are described, with the emphasis being on their structural aspects.

“…The best studied POSSs are octasilsesquioxanes that possess a cube-shaped Si 8 O 12 , in the following designated T 8 [1]. The nature and functionality of the organic substituents bound to the silicon are generally tuned to increase the compatibility or to generate reactive sites with the polymer matrix.…”

“…Simple silicon dioxide and silicate minerals constitute a large part of the Earth's crust. One of the reasons for this is the strong character of this moiety; among others, it results in frequent replacement of the Si−C bond by the Si−O bond, and there is also a strong tendency to form oligomeric structures consisting of Si−O−Si chains . Their most unique properties, that is, their high flexibility and inertness, cannot be compared to those of common organic polymers containing C−C chains .…”

“…Silica-based glass and gels such as siloxanes and silsesquioxanes are candidate matrices that often meet these requirements. 12) As a result, various silica-titania, siloxane-titania, and silsesquioxane-titania nanocomposites have been studied for photocatalytic, photolithographic, transparent protective, and self-cleaning applications.…”
