Background: Several studies have reported profound altered serum albumin level status among patients with COVID-19 disease. Hence, the current study aimed to evaluate the plasma albumin status levels and to establish the relationship between serum albumin level status and markers of hepato-biliary dysfunction and systemic inflammation among COVID-19 patients of African origin. Methods: This was a retrospective study of pre-treatment data obtained from patients with confirmed real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction COVID-19 disease in Eleme COVID-19 treatment center, Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria. Data were obtained from each patients' case notes, medical review charts, nurses' vital signs/medication charts, laboratory records, and archived data from the electronic medical records using trained research assistants at the treatment center. The data extraction was done using validated data collection templates. Data analysis was done using standard protocols. Results: Among the 473 studied cases, 112 (23.7%) had normal plasma albumin status while 361 (76.3%) had low plasma albumin status. Among the low plasma albumin status subgroups, 57.6% and 42.4% had clinically insignificant and clinically significant low plasma albumin status levels, respectively. No difference was observed in the mean plasma levels/activities of all the markers of hepato-biliary dysfunctions between the subjects with normal and low albumin status levels and also between the clinically insignificant and clinically significant low plasma albumin status subgroups (p>0.05). However, a statistically significant difference was observed in the mean plasma levels of all the systemic inflammatory markers between the subjects with normal and low albumin status levels as well as between the clinically insignificant and clinically significant low plasma albumin status subgroups (p<0.05). Furthermore, no statistically significant relationship existed between the plasma albumin status levels and all the markers of hepato-biliary dysfunctions (p>0.05). However, significant inverse relationships existed between plasma albumin status levels and all the systemic inflammatory markers/indices (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study indicates that low plasma albumin level status is common among COVID-19 patients and correlates significantly with systemic inflammation. Since COVID-19 is invariably associated with systemic inflammation, albumin may have therapeutic value in COVID-19 management. However, further studies are highly recommended.

Human interaction targets of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein: A systematic review

Objectives: The development of effective targeted therapy and drug-design approaches against the SARS-CoV-2 is a universal health priority. Therefore, it is important to assess possible therapeutic strategies against SARS-CoV-2 via its most interaction targets. The present study aimed to perform a systematic review on clinical and experimental investigations regarding SARS-COV-2 interaction targets for human cell entry. Methods: A systematic search using relevant MeSH terms and keywords was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science (ISI) databases up to July 2021. Two reviewers independently assessed the eligibility of the studies, extracted the data, and evaluated the methodological quality of the included studies. Additionally, a narrative synthesis was done as a qualitative method for data gathering and synthesis of each outcome measure. Results: A total of 5610 studies were identified, and 128 articles were included in the systematic review. Based on the results, spike antigen was the only interaction protein from SARS-CoV-2. However, the interaction proteins from humans varied including different spike receptors and several cleavage enzymes. The most common interactions of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 for cell entry were ACE2 (entry receptor) and TMPRSS2 (for spike priming). A lot of published studies have mainly focused on the ACE2 receptor followed by the TMPRSS family and furin. Based on the results, ACE2 polymorphisms as well as spike RBD mutations affected the SARS-CoV-2 binding affinity. Conclusion: The included studies shed more light on SARS-CoV-2 cellular entry mechanisms and detailed interactions, which could enhance the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and the development of new and comprehensive therapeutic approaches.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have great potential in biochemistry and medical science. In particular, iron oxide nanoparticles have demonstrated a promising effect in various biomedical applications due to their high magnetic properties, large surface area, stability, and easy functionalization. However, colloidal stability, biocompatibility, and potential toxicity of MNPs in physiological environments are crucial for their in vivo application. In this context, many research articles focused on the possible procedures for MNPs coating to improve their physic-chemical and biological properties. This review highlights one viable fabrication strategy of biocompatible iron oxide nanoparticles using human serum albumin (HSA). HSA is mainly a transport protein with many functions in various fundamental processes. As it is one of the most abundant plasma proteins, not a single drug in the blood passes without its strength test. It influences the stability, pharmacokinetics, and biodistribution of different drug-delivery systems by binding or forming its protein corona on the surface. The development of albumin-based drug carriers is gaining increasing importance in the targeted delivery of cancer therapy. Considering this, HSA is a highly potential candidate for nanoparticles coating and theranostics area and can provide biocompatibility, prolonged blood circulation, and possibly resolve the drug-resistance cancer problem.
