Loess is a widely existing cheap natural inorganic material, due to its complex composition and insufficient understanding of its efficient utilization and repeated utilization, it has not been widely used. Therefore, in this article, a simple method with buoyancy and gravity sedimentation to separate loess into large, medium and small particles. Besides, the main components of different particle size loess particles were provided. The separated particles were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-EmmettTeller (BET), Thermal gravity (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrum (XRF), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the mineral compositions in large, medium and small loess particles vary with particle size. The large loess particles contains more aluminosilicate, medium loess particles contains both aluminosilicate and clay. It can play different roles according to the content of different particle sizes of loess particles, and realize the efficient use of loess particles. The main component of small loess particles is clay. Clay particles have a wide range of applications and can be used for adsorption as well as catalytic degradation of pollutants as a catalyst carrier. Therefore, it is necessary to separate loess by a simple method to improve its utilization rate.
