“…Soils with lower salinities support a more diverse and robust microbial population, promoting collaboration between various bacteria, and ultimately leading to enhanced PAH reduction (Li et al, 2022). Due to their resistance and carcinogenicity to humans, High molecular weight (HMW) PAHs with 4-7 rings are substantially more dangerous than the low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs, which have 2-3 aromatic rings (Dai et al, 2022). Our study noticed that the pyrene (a 4-ringed PAH) is present at a high concentration and followed by PHE (a 2-ringed PAH) in the soil sample, isolating a more potent PAH degrader is essential to eliminate the pollutants at the contaminated site.…”

“…In spite of prohibitions, this problem has not been solved, as controls are quite difficult (Zhao et al 2020 ). Based on results from 100 sampling sites, polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution is strongest in China’s north and northwest, with an average of 900–1500 ng PAH/g soil (Zhang and Chen 2017 ), and also in coastal areas (Dai et al 2022 ). Next to PAH, heavy metal pollution is severe in many places.…”

“…2 Especially, high-molecular-weight PAHs are recalcitrant and carcinogenic to human beings. 3 Due to the high hydrophobicity of PAHs, the soil is the most important terrestrial reservoir for them. 4 For example, the total concentrations of PAHs at Superfund sites in the United States could reach up to hundreds or thousands of mg kg −1 .…”
