Review on system development in eddy current testing and technique for defect classification and characterization

Abstract: Eddy current testing (ECT) is one of the non-destructive evaluation techniques widely used, especially in oil and gas industries. It characterized noisy data to the less-than-perfect detection and as an indication of serious false alarm problem. However, not many researchers have described in detail the intelligent ECT crack detection system. This paper introduces a review of ECT technique and factors that affect the signal fundamental according to the hardware and software development. First, describe the mag… Show more

“…Compared with other detection methods, eddy current testing has many advantages in detecting metal components. It can detect metal component defects [7] and other properties [8,9], especially on the surface and subsurface damage of metal components, such as cracks, folding, pore, and inclusions [10,11].…”

“…Also discussed in detail were the limitation of utilizing the coil as a sensor and compensation techniques that have been used in the ECT. In another study, Ali et al 11 discussed in detail the method of the ECT and the parameters that impacted the signal fundamental in relation to the hardware and software. Garcı´a-Martı´n et al 12 delibertated an overview of the primary variables and the principles of ECT sensors.…”

“…Non-destructive testing (NDT) plays an important role in inspection of structural integrity of materials through detection and sizing of flaws. It is important to detect flaws in the materials at the early stage to prevent catastrophic failure [1,2]. Many material inspection methods have been reported in the reviewed literature, including magnetic flux leakage [3], ultrasonic [4] and acoustic [5].…”
