Review on Recent Trends in Rice Bran Oil Processing

Abstract: Rice bran oil (RBO) is popular in several countries such as Japan, India, Korea, China and Indonesia as a cooking oil. It has been shown that RBO is an excellent cooking and salad oil due to its high smoke point and delicate flavor. The nutritional qualities and health effects of rice bran oil are also established. RBO is rich in unsaponifiable fraction (unsap), which contains the micronutrients like vitamin E complexes, gamma oryzanol, phytosterols, polyphenols and squalene. However, the high FFA and acetone-… Show more

“…However, for the fi rst seven days of storage, the TBARS content of the bulk RBO mayonnaise was lower than that of the CNO:RBO 30:70 mayonnaise (Figure 3). Rice bran oil contains oryzanol, tocopherols and tocotrienols [Ghosh, 2007;Gunstone, 2011], which helped to reduce the initial oxidation of the mayonnaise. The TBARS content of the bulk RBO mayonnaise increased up to day 21 and then decreased after that.…”

“…Nonetheless, oil refinements are unavoidable processes required for RBO manufacture. These processes include settling or filtration of bran fines, degumming, dewaxing, deacidification, bleaching and deodorization 17 . For instance, the high content of free fatty acid in crude RBO requires neutralization with alkali to eliminate the free fatty acid.…”

“…This combination of conditions affected the overall MFC performance operated with different electrode and wastewater. Wastewater from rice bran oil refinery may have some complex components including poly-unsaturated Fats, mono-saturated fats, saturated fats, rich amount of essential fatty acids, Linoleic fatty acid, Linolenic acids and trace amount of other nutrients that are recommended for edible oils (Ghosh, 2007); whereas wastewater from rice mill is having more amount of starch and lesser of other complex nutrients such as Ash Percentage, Crude Fat, Crude Protein, Crude Fiber and Vitamin B-6 because it is the result of the basic steps of parboiling namely soaking and steaming procedure of paddy in order to obtain commercialized rice. Therefore, it is simple composition of wastewater (Akhter et al, 2014).…”
