Poor shelling quality degrades the performance and profit of the peanut industry. The Hertz theory and the wear resistance experimental method were applied to identify a highly wear-resistant material guaranteeing a low mechanical damage rate (MDR) of peanut kernels. The Box–Behnken design method was applied in the experiment to illustrate the influence of the material’s elastic modulus (X1), radius of curvature of the key parts (X2), rotating speed of the shelling drum (X3), and clearance between the shelling drum and concave screen (X4) on MDR and shelling efficiency (SE). Depending on the analysis of variance, the weights of the influential factors were observed as X1 > X3 > X4 > X2. The mathematical models of MDR and SE were derived from the least squares’ method, and four-dimensional slice diagrams of the three most significant factors were used to illustrate the trends of MDR and SE. A multi-objective analysis provided the optimal combination of parameters as: X1 = 10 MPa, X2 = 12.77 mm, X3 = 277.48 r/min, and X4 = 24.24 mm, yielding MDR = 4.89% and SE = 97.91%. The results were further verified by a production trial test, proving that the proposed solution with the selected material, machine design, and working parameters were effective in improving peanut shelling quality.

Rice milling is one of the important steps in post-harvest operations to get good quality white rice. As an innovation in improving customer service, a mobile rice mill unit (MRMU) has recently been operated in various rice-producing areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and prospects of MRMU based on technical and economic analysis. The research was conducted in East Lampung Regency, Lampung, Indonesia, by observing three MRMUs. Each mill was observed for three working days to obtain MRMU performance data, namely grain quality, milled yield, working time, fuel consumption, working capacity, and quality of white rice produced. Other information includes machine price, the machine age, estimated economic life, investment, interest rate, fuel consumption, operator wage, milling charge, and repair and maintenance costs. Results showed that MRMU had an actual capacity between 63.29-98.82 kg/hour with a milled yield between 60.41-64.96%. The white rice produced has a proportion of head rice 58.26-61.42%, with a whiteness index less than the SNI for rice quality standards. The unit cost of the rice milling process using MRMU was an average of 457.91 IDR/kg. At a milling charge of 666.67 IDR/kg, the operation of MRMU is economically feasible at an annual working hour higher than 1000 h. In addition, the MRMU operation was not economically acceptable at a milling charge of 500 IDR/kg. With the rapid growth in the rice milling numbers, an unbiased regulation is required to avoid unhealthy competition among the MRMU enterprises.

Rice is one of the most important crops throughout the world, as it contributes toward satisfying the food demand of much of the global population. It is well known that rice production generates a considerable number of by-products, among which rice bran deserves particular attention. This by-product is exceptionally rich in nutrients, since it contains a wide spectrum of macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) as well as dietary fibers and bioactive compounds. However, rice bran is usually wasted or just used for the production of low-cost products. The lipidic fraction of rice bran contains an unsaponifiable fraction that is rich in such functional components as tocopherols, γ-oryzanol, tocotrienols, and phytosterols. This lipidic fraction can be extracted to obtain rice bran oil (RBO), a high value-added product with unique health properties as a result of its high concentration in γoryzanol, a powerful antioxidant mixture of bioactive molecules. Conventional extraction methods employ hexane as the solvent, but these methods suffer from some drawbacks linked to the toxicity of hexane for humans and the environment. The aim of the review presented herein is to point out the new green technologies currently applied for the extraction of RBO, by highlighting reliable alternatives to conventional solvent extraction methods that are in line with the twelve principles of green chemistry and a circular economy.
