Review on high repetition rate and mass production of the cryogenic targets for laser IFE

Abstract: In inertial fusion energy (IFE) research, a considerable attention has recently been focused on the issue of large target fabrication for MJ-class laser facilities. The ignition and high-gain target designs require a condensed uniform layer of hydrogen fuel on the inside of a spherical shell. In this report, we discuss the current status and further trends in the area of developing the layering techniques intended to produce ignition, and layering techniques proposed to high repetition rate and mass production… Show more

“…Это означает, что метод FST перспективен при формировании устойчивых ультрадисперсных D-Т-слоёв внутри мишеней реакторного класса. В настоящее время развитие технологий на основе метода FST осуществляется в рамках программы по созданию частотного модуля FST-МФ для мишеней реакторного класса, а также программы по созданию систем бесконтактного позиционирования и транспорта готовой криогенной мишени в фокус мощной лазерной установки или реактора ИТС [27,28].…”

“…To meet the above requirements, the LPI has proposed to use line-moving and free-standing targets to develop a scientific and technological base for repeatable target supply at the laser focus [2][3][4][5]. Precisely moving targets co-operate all production steps in the FST-TL that is considered as a potential solution of mass-production layering and noncontact target delivery in pulsed, repetitively cycled IFE systems.…”

“…In addition, to maintain an acceptable tritium inventory, it is needed the development of reasonably fast layering techniques. An overview of various fuel layering methods is given in Reference [2,19].…”

“…In a laser energy power plant, fusion reactions must occur approximately ten times a second, and a free-standing target (FST) transmission line becomes an integral part of any fusion reactor. Developing target fabrication technologies is thus centered on the issues of isotropic fuel layers and high repetition rates, with careful attention paid to an acceptable cost of target fabrication and noncontact delivery at the laser focus [1][2][3][4][5] . In this report, we discuss the development strategy and future prospects of the FST layering method proposed at the Lebedev Physical Institute for mass target manufacturing for high-repetition-rate facilities: a rate of 5-10 Hz leads to the number of targets (5 × 10 5 -1 × 10 6 ) each day.…”

“…To meet the demand for such targets, the Lebedev Physical Institute (LPI) has made significant progress in technological developments based on advanced fuel layering inside freestanding and line-moving targets -which is referred to as the FST layering method [1][2][3][4][5] . Moving targets combine all production steps in an FST transmission line that is considered as a potential solution for mass target manufacturing.…”
