Summary The implementation of mobility restrictions and home office schemes due to the COVID‐19 pandemic have influenced electricity consumption patterns and levels. This study analyzes the effect of physical distancing measures regarding mobility on the energy consumption trends for the Brazilian energy system and its subsystems (Northeast, North, South, and Southeast‐Midwest). Trends were evaluated by the Joinpoint software, and the analysis comprehended the period between January 1 and May 27, 2020. Daily load data was grouped into weeks, with the calculation of weekly percentage changes considering a 95% confidence interval and p < 0.05. The weekly electricity loads were compared in the periods before and after the isolation decrees were enforced in Brazil (March 15, 2020). Statistically significant decreases were observed in the levels of electricity consumption, with trends represented by two joinpoints. Due to the different profiles of consumption across the geographic regions, the resulting electricity dynamics were also different. This is the first study to employ joinpoint analysis for the calculation of energy consumption trends focusing on the COVID‐29 pandemic. Data presented herein is unique, in its focus on Brazil, which enables more accurate implications to be drawn for Brazilian policy makers.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown can be regarded as a forced social experiment, the results of which show how to use energy under specific conditions. During this period, there was a reduction in electricity consumption at the level of the power system, but a different specificity distinguishes the group of household users. The article aims at presenting and analysing the identified issues concerning residential electricity users based on the experience from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Data from energy meters from almost 7000 flats in Warsaw’s housing estates during the lockdown in 2020 and the analogous period before the pandemic were used. The analysis showed that, on average, residential users staying practically the whole day in their flats increased their energy consumption, but without increasing their average daily peak power, smoothing the profile in the morning hours to the level reaching the peak power that had occurred in the analogous period before the lockdown. The peak power of the sections feeding the different numbers of dwellings also remained practically unchanged during the lockdown compared to the pre-pandemic period. The pressure to work and educate remotely should contribute to an increase in the digital competence of society, which may result in an increased interest in new forms of activity and cooperation based on demand-side response and prosumption mechanisms, with digital settlements for energy exchange and services.

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has affected most countries and has impacted every household's operations. Mandatory stay-at-home lockdowns have forced building residents to use more energy for their daily routine activities, giving rise to higher energy usage. The increased energy use by building residents results in high energy bills and leads to a scarcity in the energy supply. Identifying factors that can control the high energy consumption in buildings can be used to optimize energy consumption and act as energy conservation factors. This proposed research is conducted to identify and explore the most influential energy consumption factors amid COVID-19 pandemic in residential buildings using a case study in India. To analyze the energy consumption factors, a Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology based Best Worst Method (BWM) and a Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) methodology have been integrated. The results show that among 34 comprehensive energy consumption factors, the high priority topmost 50% of the factors were analyzed. The main research outcome indicates that 53% of the factors were in the cause group and the remaining 47% were in the effect group factors. Research results conclude that in response to COVID-19, social distancing, home quarantine, and home transformation were the primary factors for energy consumption in homes. Among the sub-factors, the lockdown of streets, shutdown of public markets, and psychological factors were the top three factors adding to increased energy consumption. Further, Industrial and economic importance of the research is also discussed.
