Frost accumulated on the surface of the evaporator leads to the increase of heat transfer resistance between the refrigerant and environmental medium, which reduces the system performance of cold storage and air source heat pump. To solve this problem, the surface-modified evaporator can achieve retardation of the frost formation, which greatly improves the heat exchange effect between the refrigerant and the external environment. In this paper, a novel coating sprayed on the evaporator was developed using the sol-gel method and the hydrophobicity, durability, and thermal conductivity were investigated. Moreover, a modified method of frost weight measurement under different temperatures and humidity was first proposed. The results showed that the coating has a favorable hydrophobic effect and thermal conductivity, and long service life. Under the standard experimental condition, the frost weight on the coating surface can be reduced up to 26.1 %. Additionally, the effect of coating composition ratio on its performance was further investigated. To sum up, this new coating has the potential for industrialized application.

Fluorocarbon gas consumption can contribute in direct and indirect impact to the environment such as ozone depletion and global warming due to fluorocarbon gas leakage and increase in electricity consumption, respectively. This study is focused on early detection of fluorocarbon gas leakage on refrigeration unit to determine scenario of fluorocarbon gas leakage management and estimate reduction potential of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and the co-benefits in energy saving. In this study, the Internet of Things (IoT) that utilized ultrasonic sensor detection system to detect early fluorocarbon gas leakage was installed at the chiller unit at two selected facilities, A and B. After installation, the data was monitored, and any gas leakage detected was countermeasure. Results from the data monitoring, reduction potential of GHG emission and energy saving co-benefits calculated by using formula adopted from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association, (JRAIA). The monitoring results found that different response rate towards leakage detection between two facilities A and B (chiller 1 and chiller 2) contributes to 33.9%, 60.6% and 21.3% of fluorocarbon leakage. Installation of IoT based refrigerant leakage device proved that early detection and on time countermeasures successfully reduce 30 t-CO2e/yrs (facility A) and 460 t-CO2e/yrs (facility B). Thus, proper fluorocarbon gas management is important to reduce environmental impact of the fluorocarbon gases.

The condensation frosting phenomenon commonly exists in engineering applications, and the relevant studies on flat plates with fixed surface temperatures are the most concerned in related fields. The existing studies usually focus on droplet condensation and frozen characteristics in the center region of cold plates and cannot reveal those near the plate edge. Therefore, a systematic study from droplet condensation to frost layer growth stages in the edge region of a cold plate was conducted in this paper. The experimental results showed that the frozen stage period of the edge-affected zone was significantly smaller than that of the unaffected zone. The ratio of average freezing wave propagation velocity in the edge-affected zone to that in the unaffected zone at plate temperatures of -9.0, -14.0, and -19.0 o C were 7. 70, 5.56, and 5.11, respectively. Besides, the area-average equivalent diameter and coverage area ratio of droplets decreased with a decrease in plate temperature at the end of their respective droplet frozen stages. This study may help to better understand temporal and spatial condensation frosting characteristics on a horizontal cold plate with right-angle edges, and guide the establishment of a staged and divisional frosting model on cold plates.
