Review on Energy and Fire Performance of Water Wall Systems as a Green Building Façade

Abstract: Glass façades are widely utilized in green buildings. Ensuring fire safety while reducing the energy need without compromising occupants’ comfort is a challenge in the modern-day green buildings with glass façades. One way of achieving both aspects is to construct a water wall system as a building façade. A water wall system has a water layer between two glass panes and can be considered as a glass façade system. The focus of this review, which builds on the published studies, is how water wall systems can hel… Show more

“…When the thermal stress exceeds the critical breaking stress threshold, glass breakage occurs [ 45 , 46 ]. The common causes of glass crack initiation and growth are glass color, outdoor shading patterns, and indoor shading devices, as depicted in Figure 2 b–d [ 47 ]. Specifically, glass with tinted colors absorbs solar radiation [ 48 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the visible solar radiation that penetrates the building interior reduces the energy needed for artificial lighting during the daytime. 15 The semi-transparent architecture of the WWS also provides aesthetic advantages over opaque walls. 14 Therefore, WWSs are a useful alternative to ordinary glass façades, and offer many advantages without compromising the benefits of glass façades.…”

“…However, careful examination and investigation have revealed further insulation enhancement in building compartments. This will significantly decrease buildings' heating and cooling requirements by about 20-60%, improving thermal comfort [18][19][20]. There have been various developed mechanisms to help improve heating and cooling requirements, and better methods are still being tested and developed [21].…”
