Review on early technology assessments of nanotechnologies in oncology

Abstract: Nanotechnology is expected to play an increasingly important role in the diagnostics, prognostics, and management of targeted cancer treatments. While papers have described promising results for nanotechnology in experimental settings, the translation of fundamental research into clinical applications has yet to be widely adopted. In future, policy makers will need to anticipate new developments for clinical implementation and introduce technology assessments. Here we present an overview of the literature on t… Show more

“…Polymer-based nanotechnology is a promising technology that is playing an increasingly important role in cancer treatment. Nanoscale devices can serve as targeted drug-delivery vehicles, carrying chemotherapeutic agents or therapeutic genes directly into cancer cells (Retèl et al, 2009). PEG-DSPE has been used to prepare liposomes or micelles capable of solubilizing hydrophobic drugs and delivering them to specific locations via targeting ligands conjugated to the particles.…”

“…Nanotechnology is embodied within a suite of the most promising technologies in the 21st century and is expected to be the technological foundation for future innovations (Pitkethly 2004;Retel et al 2009;Roco 2004;Siegrist et al 2007). Research and development investments in this field are growing rapidly throughout the world enabling wider applications of the technology (Roco et al 2011).…”

“…Examples of this method can be found in studies on nanotechnology and gene array testing in breast cancer treatment [2, 3]. This can assist the researcher and product developers in identifying critical aspects that can influence or facilitate ultimate implementation and acceptance by professionals.…”
