Abstract.In this paper, we study the nonlinear dynamics of clusters of tethered satellites via numerical stepby-step time integration of the differential equations of motion. The basic algorithm is Central Difference explicit method. The masses of the space vehicles are considered lumped and the connection cables are considered massless and of linear elastic material. The considered nonlinearities are due to large displacements leading to changes in masses coordinates. The proposed algorithm does not involve assemblage of stiffness leading to changes in masses coordinates. The proposed algorithm does not involve assemblage of stiffness matrices. Instead, the elastic restoring forces are directly computed at each time step. A new time step optimization procedure is implemented. As an example, a cluster of four satellites in a tetrahedral disposition is considered. Free damped vibrations due to large initial conditions are computed.

We introduce a decentralized attitude control strategy that can dramatically reduce the usage of propellant, by taking full advantage of the physical coupling of the tether. Motivated by a controllability analysis, indicating that both array resizing and spin-up are fully controllable by the reaction wheels and the tether motor, we report the first propellant-free underactuated control results for tethered formation flying spacecraft. This paper also describes the hardware development and experimental validation of the proposed method using the Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, and Reorient Experimental Satellites test bed. In particular, a new relative sensing mechanism that uses sixdegree-of-freedom force-torque sensors and rate gyroscopes is introduced and validated in the closed-loop control experiments.

Summary Stabilization control is an essential mission for the tethered space robot‐target combination during the postcapture phase of tethered space robot (TSR). In this paper, the stabilization problem of such a tumbling combination is studied. With the consideration of the space tether and the attitude of the TSR's gripper, the dynamic model of the combination is first derived using Lagrange method. Then a robust nonlinear controller for the combination is proposed based on the backstepping control method. Considering the constraint on the velocity of the space tether, command filter method is utilized to guarantee the velocity of the space tether within a permitted range. A feedback term is designed to compensate the saturation of the thruster. Moreover, an adaptive law is designed to estimate the disturbance of parameter uncertainties and this disturbance is compensated in the proposed controller. Numerical simulations suggest that the proposed robust controller can realize the orbit and attitude stabilization of the combination; besides, the velocity of the space tether is effectively constrained and the parameter uncertainties of the combination can be compensated via the adaptive law.
