Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using coherent Rayleigh backscattering in an optical fiber has become a ubiquitous technique for monitoring multiple dynamic events in real time. It has continued to constitute a steadily increasing share of the fiber-optic sensor market, thanks to its interesting applications in many safety, security, and integrity monitoring systems. In this contribution, an overview of the recent advances of research in DAS based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR) is provided. Some advanced techniques used to enhance the performance of ϕ-OTDR sensors for measuring backscattering intensity changes through reduction of measurement noise are presented, in addition to methods used to increase the dynamic measurement capacity of ϕ-OTDR schemes beyond conventional limits set by the sensing distance. Recent ϕ-OTDR configurations which significantly enhance the measurement spatial resolution, including those which decouple it from the probing pulse width, are also discussed. Finally, a review of recent advances in more precise quantitative measurement of an external impact based on frequency shift and phase demodulation methods using simple direct detection ϕ-OTDR schemes is given.

Tactile perception is a feature benefiting reliable grasping and manipulation. This paper presents the design of an integrated fingertip force sensor employing an optical fiber based approach where applied forces modulate light intensity. The proposed sensor system is developed to support grasping of a broad range of objects, including those that are hard as well those that are soft. The sensor system is comprised of four sensing elements forming a tactile array integrated with the tip of a finger. We investigate the design configuration of a separate force sensing element with the aim to improve its measurement range. The force measurement of a single tactile element is based on a two-level displacement that is achieved thanks to a hybrid sensing structure made up of a stiff linear and flexible ortho-planar spring. An important outcome of this paper is a miniature tactile fingertip sensor that is capable of perceiving light contact, typically occurring during the initial stages of a grasp, as well as measuring higher forces, commonly present during tight grasps.

In contrast to conventional polymer optical fibres (POFs), single-mode microstructured POFs (SM mPOF) exhibit polarization properties that make them potentially interesting for their use in the design and development of polarimetric fibre optic systems. In spite of the theoretical sixfold symmetry of the microstructure that yields zero linear birefringence, a measurement technique reveals us that the SM mPOF behaves as a linear birefringent system with clearly defined optical axes and characteristics. Regarding externally induced birefringence mechanisms acting upon the SM mPOF, either bend-and pressure-induced retardations or twist-induced light rotation follow the behaviour predicted theoretically. More specifically, bend-induced retardation varies linearly with the inverse square of the bending radius of the fibre, and in the case of asymmetrical lateral stress, pressure-induced retardation varies with the applied force. As to twist-induced rotation, the electric field rotates linearly with the angle through which the fibre is twisted. All cases are highly reproducible phenomena that, if used advantageously, may yield useful mPOF-based polarimetric optical devices not exploited yet.
