Review on antimicrobial peptides from Malaysian amphibian resources: status, research approaches and ways forward

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant threat to human health globally. Diseases caused by AMR are getting more challenging to cure due to the increasing rate of resistance of microbial pathogens. Drugs formulated with antimicrobial peptide (AMP) can be applied to treat these diseases. AMPs are found naturally within organisms, especially amphibians, and is related to the high adaptability of defence mechanisms against various pathogens and predators in the environment. This review focuses on the curr… Show more

“…Nearly 10 million people worldwide lose their lives every year, because of antibiotic resistance. [5][6][7][8][9][10] One antibiotic that is commonly administered to cure infections against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, and is becoming more and more a target of drug resistance, is Ciprofloxacin (Cip), a second-generation fluoroquinolone. 11,12 Inside the body, Cip is partially metabolized in both humans and livestock, and excreted as waste products.…”
