Review of Tumor Dormancy Therapy Using Traditional Oriental Herbal Medicine

Abstract: Objective:Standard cancer therapy prolongs survival, but can be detrimental to the quality of life, compromise the immune system, and leave residual disease that can cause recurrence years or decades in the future. Tumor dormancy therapy is a novel therapeutic approach that may improve these shortcomings, promote quality of life, and prolong survival. The aim of this study was to analyze studies on dormancy therapy, especially studies using traditional Oriental herbal medicine, so as to evaluate the efficacy o… Show more

“…In fact, regulating the cell cycle to treat tumors does not necessarily mean annihilating all tumor cells. Tumor dormancy therapy has been proposed in academia [158]. It may be a good choice to stabilize G0 cells or induce cells to enter the dormant phase during cancer therapy.…”

“…41 Tumor dormancy is known to contribute to homeostatic controls, such as antiangiogenesis, despite active proliferation and immunological conditions. 42 For patients with advanced NSCLC, because of old age, the adverse effects of chemotherapy, the lack of tolerance to chemotherapy regimens, the failure of many lines of therapy, and private reasons, some cancer patients cannot undergo conventional systemic therapy. Cytotoxic therapy is important for reducing tumor size, but adverse events can affect the patients' condition and survival.…”

“…Moreover, previous mathematical models suggest that dormancy can be theoretically maintained for a long period of time, if not permanently (79). This paradigm is proposed as tumour dormancy therapy: instead of aiming at tumour elimination via aggressive treatments, the pro-dormancy approaches may suppress tumour cell growth and enhance cancer patients' quality of life in a gentler manner (80)(81)(82). Tumour cells tend to remain dormant when low-dose immune checkpoint inhibitors are applied with hyperthermia [reviewed by Corthay and coworkers (83)].…”
