Review of the validated HPLC and LC‐MS/MS methods for determination of drugs used in clinical practice for Alzheimer's disease

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder and is the most frequent type of dementia among elderly people. Donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, tacrine and memantine are the US Food and Drug Administration approved oral drugs used in the treatment of AD. Quantitation of these drugs in various biological matrices and monitoring them in long-term treatment is essential to titer the dose of these drugs and ensure patient compliance. This review provides a comprehensive account of various HPLC and LC-MS/… Show more

“…This period covered the time to reach steady-state plasma concentration of donepezil. The steady-state plasma concentration of donepezil was determined by using reversed-phase ultra performance liquid chromatography with photo diode array (UPLC-PDA) detection with a minor modification 23. Diphenhydramine was used as an internal standard 24.…”

“…Donepezil and rivastigmine are two main oral drugs approved by US Drug Administration, which are used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Quantitation of these drugs in various biological matrixes and monitoring them in a long‐term treatment are essential to titer the dose of these drugs and ensure the patient's compliance . On the other hand, nowadays certain pharmaceuticals are attracting attention as a potentially new class of water pollutants.…”

“…In addition, identification of normal physiological functions of Aβ is an extremely important emerging issue, as many therapeutic strategies used for the treatment of AD point to prevent Aβ production or to increase Aβ clearance from the brain. Consistently, it cannot be, so far, ruled out that these strategies does not interfere with important physiological functions ( Abramov et al, 2009 ; Kang et al, 2013 ; Bukanova et al, 2014 ; Mizoi et al, 2014 ; Ponnayyan Sulochana et al, 2014 ).…”
