A number of publications containing structural data, characteristics of nonlinear optical properties of pure and doped crystals of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) family have been reviewed to analyze the structural and symmetry conditionality of nonlinear optical properties of these crystals. The pseudosymmetric features of KTP-type crystals with respect to inversion are investigated. Specifically, pseudoinversion distribution maps are calculated; pseudoinversion extrema and coordinates of pseudoinversion centres are found; and the distributions of pure and doped KTP-type structures and their individual atomic sublattices over the degree of pseudoinversion are analyzed. A correlation between the characteristics of nonlinear optical properties of a number of crystals belonging to the KTP family and the degree of pseudoinversion of their atomic structures is demonstrated.

We have developed a Scanning Near-Field Optic Microscope (SNOM), which is based on a commercial tuning-fork sensor, capable of measuring the topography and the optical signal, at the same time. We have measured the SNOM transmission, as well as the topography, of an RbTiOPO 4 single crystal, which exhibits two kinds of macroscopic ferroelectric domains. A chemical selective attack has been performed to distinguish them. As a consequence, we obtained zones with a noticeable roughness (C -) in comparison with the flat aspect of the other ones (C + ). The SNOM topography images have been compared to Atomic Force Microscopy ones, which has a better resolution. The changes observed in the transmission measurements are due to different effects: i) variations of the dielectric constant at the interface walls between domains; ii) light scattering, wavelength dependent, at the grains in the C -face. Finally, we have determined the angles formed at the domain-walls between inverted domains, which are measured to be higher than 90º and close to 135º, as could be expected, because of the combination between Estudios de microscopía óptica de campo cercano y de fuerza atómica en RbTiOPO 4 monocristalino con dominios ferroeléctricosHemos desarrollado un Microscopio Óptico de Campo Cercano (SNOM) que es capaz de adquirir una señal óptica, al mismo tiempo que la topografía, basado en un sensor de fuerza lateral comercial. Con este microscopio hemos medido la transmisión óptica en campo cercano, así como la topografía, de un cristal de RbTiOPO 4 , que exhibe dos tipos de dominios ferroeléctricos macroscópicos. Previamente, la muestra había sido sometida a un ataque químico selectivo, con el que se pueden distinguir dos zonas diferentes, una con una rugosidad apreciable (C -) y otra con aspecto perfectamente plano (C + ), aspecto que tenía la superficie antes del ataque. Hemos comparado las imágenes de topografía del SNOM con otras tomadas usando un Microscopio de Fuerzas Atómicas, con mayor resolución espacial. Los cambios observados en las medidas de transmisión son debidos a dos tipos de efectos: i) las variaciones en la constante dieléctrica en las paredes de dominios y sus cercanías; ii) la dispersión de luz, dependiente de la longitud de onda, en los granos de la cara C -. Por último, hemos determinado los ángulos que forman las paredes de dominios invertidos, que resultan ser mayores de 90º y bastante cercanos a 135º, en promedio, tal y como se podría esperar, debido a la combinación de las direcciones

Optical parametric generation in periodically poled KTiOPO4 via extended phase matching

We report an experimental demonstration of optical parametric generation in a periodically poled KTiOPO 4 crystal based on the principle of mirrorless optical parametric oscillation. A femtosecond pump pulse spectrally centered at 792 nm from a Ti:sapphire amplifier is prechirped to minimize Kerr effects. The pump pulse is then injected into the nonlinear crystal and down converted to signal and idler pulses, approximately centered at 1584 nm, via amplified spontaneous parametric down conversion in a copropagating type-II quasiphase matching configuration. The maximum internal downconversion efficiency is 43%, the highest ever reported for optical parametric generators based on KTiOPO 4 crystals. Such a device may find applications in optical signal processing and biological imaging. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. ͓DOI: 10.1063/1.2790825͔Since its demonstration more than 40 years ago, 1 frequency conversion through optical parametric oscillation ͑OPO͒ as an efficient technique for extending the wavelength range of laser systems has attracted considerable interest. 2 Different from its inverse process, the sum frequency generation ͑SFG͒, OPO usually requires external optical cavities for efficient conversion and frequency selection. The need for external cavities can be alleviated in the optical parametric generation ͑OPG͒ process, where extremely high singlepass optical gain of over 100 dB is obtained such that efficient generation of new frequencies can be achieved via amplified spontaneous parametric down conversion without the need of a cavity in a simple and robust setup. 3 In the ultrafast regime, however, OPG is often difficult because the group velocity mismatch greatly reduces the effective interaction length between the pump and the down-converted components.To eliminate the need of a cavity and reduce the threshold of parametric oscillation, in 1966 Harris proposed an optical parametric oscillator without an external optical cavity, 4 where the signal and the idler waves propagate in opposite directions with respect to the pump wave. Such a principle, however, was experimentally demonstrated only very recently ͑after the submission of this work͒ by Canalias and Pasiskevicius 5 due to the difficulty of phase matching in such a configuration. 6 To avoid the difficult phase matching condition, Tsang 7 theoretically predicted that the mirrorless OPO behavior can be achieved by three-wave mixing of copropagating pulses with the extended phase matching condition. 8,9 Extended phase matching requires that, besides the usual phase matching condition, v p = ͑v s + v i ͒ / 2 is also satisfied, where v p , v s , and v i are the group velocities of the pump, signal, and idler pulses, respectively. Physically, although the pump, signal, and idler pulses all propagate in the same direction in the laboratory frame, the signal and idler pulses propagate in the opposite directions in the moving frame of the pump pulse.
