Review of the Results of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) Breeding at a Large‐Scale Hatchery

Abstract: Contents Long‐term data on the induced spawning of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) at a large‐scale hatchery were evaluated. Breeders at the farm prefer medium‐size fish with body weights between 4 and 8 kg. The number of females selected for propagation in the first period of the spawning season made up about half of the total number of females (47.5%). The average spawning ratio from the data of 2620 females receiving hormonal injections was 79.8%. From the egg production data of 2086 females, the average pseu… Show more

“…The mean PGSI values were similar between the two groups. These results are comparable to long-term data on the induced spawning of common carp at a large-scale hatchery production (Szabó et al, 2000). They are also similar to the data from ovulatory experiments on common carp carried out in the spawning season period (Kucharczyk et al, 2008).…”

“…The availability of mature male common carp broodstock is the first step in breeding practices conducted on a production scale (Szabó et al 2000). Obtaining carp sperm and eggs under natural conditions is very problematic, so the breeding of these fish is performed mainly under controlled conditions.…”

“…Most research on common carp spawning has focused on fish under intensive culture in Europe and Asia (Gupta, 1975; Crivelli, 1981; Fida et al ., 1988; Szabo et al ., 2000). From the few studies in natural systems it is clear that patterns differ between disparate environments (Swee & McCrimmon, 1966; Shikhshabekov, 1972; Fida et al ., 1988).…”
