Review of surgical resection and reconstruction in head and neck cancer

Abstract: This review summarizes the development of head and neck cancer resection and reconstruction. The developments in the treatment of cancer patients are reflected in their surgical outcomes, in addition to functional and aesthetic improvements. New technologies, such as surgical simulation and planning, minimally invasive surgery, and microsurgery have been added to the field to improve surgical resection of the tumor and reconstruction. The field is still growing to optimize the management of head and neck cance… Show more

“…As cirurgias com a presença de robôs são indicadas em diversos tipos de procedimentos na odontologia, principalmente em intervenções complexas que necessitam de uma alta precisão ou de resultados funcionais e estéticos superiores às cirurgias convencionais, ou intervenções nas quais antes o procedimento não era possível, como pode-se ver nas citações de autores como Sun et al (2020), Alfouzan et al (2018), Gulati et al (2015), Reddy et al(2015) e Kumar et al (2016).…”

“…Surgery is the main treatment employed for H&N tumors, usually indicated for initial tumors, but in some cases, replaced by isolated RT. 9 It is reserved for tumors in which resection with neoplasia-free margins and minimal functional disorder is possible, thus ensuring complete removal of the neoplasia; 10 even so, it can result in aesthetic disfigurement and significant functionality loss, which can implicate in emotional changes and social interaction impairment. 9,11 Any H&N surgery patient must undergo a prior dental checkup.…”

“…8,19 Microvascular free flaps are increasingly performed worldwide in head and neck surgery departments since the 1970s, and are associated with better functional and aesthetical outcomes compared to those used in more conservative treatments, while ensuring high flap survival rates. 20,21 They are reportedly reliable in achieving successful reconstruction of the head and neck regions, with the incidence of postoperative complications being largely related with preoperative comorbidities. 22 According to most authors, surgical re-exploration due to vascular insufficiency is necessary in less than 10% of the flaps, and necrosis of the flap occurs in only about 5% of cases.…”
