Multimedia has become one of the most complex and diverse digital learning media for creating knowledge and enabling a sensory learning environment that helps students to learn better and integrate information. By emphasizing on real-world experiences, learning is intended to be applied to students' thought process. However, learning while having fun cannot be isolated from the media, which makes it easy for students to access it. This implies that the media must be able to fulfil the demands of students' progress. According to existing learning theories, authentic-based learning environments aid students in developing appropriate and effective understanding. Personal relevance for the students' perspective, authentic-based learning environments are positioned within suitable educational settings and the notion of an authentic-based learning environment is based mostly on situated learning theory and may be described in terms of the task setting of student roles. Students are always engaged in learning when the education is creative, interactive, and challenging. Thus, multimedia learning can create an authentic learning environment. Instructions that are not created using multimedia theories may result in an unproductive learning environment. This study examined some of the advantages that students may by from employing authentic-based multimedia learning in higher education. Internet databases with relevant information, such as SCOPUS, ERIC, Springer, IEEE, Emerald, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google were searched. Research on the literature acquired from web sources has demonstrated that authentic-based multimedia learning environments provide several benefits to students in higher education institutions. Smart classroom preferences and information literacy among college students

In recent years, smart classrooms have been widely constructed in colleges and universities. To help the design of student-centred smart classroom in compliance with students’ information literacy levels and enable all students to adapt to the smart classroom smoothly, this study utilised a quantitative method to investigate the information literacy and preferences for smart classroom learning environments (PSCLE) of 873 Chinese college students. The results indicated statistically significant effects of college students’ information literacy on the eight dimensions of students’ PSCLE (student negotiation, inquiry learning, reflective thinking, usefulness, ease of use, multiple sources, connectedness, functional design). In addition, three profiles could be identified regarding students’ information literacy. Students with a high level of information literacy obtained significantly higher scores on four of the critical dimensions of PSCLE (student negotiation, inquiry learning, reflective thinking and functional design) than those students with medium or low levels of information literacy. Based on the results, we suggest that college students’ information literacy and their PSCLE should be considered by researchers and education practitioners when designing, constructing and evaluating smart classroom learning environments. Implications for practice or policy: Schools should evaluate students’ information literacy and equip smart classrooms with various information communication technology devices to cater to students’ varying levels of information literacy. Instructors or curriculum designers should develop differentiated instruction strategies and activities for students, in alignment with different levels of information literacy. Institutions and organisations should reconsider evaluation criteria for smart classrooms and incorporate the improvement of students’ information literacy as an important indicator.

IntroductionThis study examined the significant differences in Chinese college students’ learning perceptions and outcomes between the “quasi smart” and smart classrooms under the perspective of the community of inquiry (CoI) framework.MethodsThe participants were 275 freshmen students who took the “college physics” hybrid course in the spring of 2022 at a four-year university in central China. Data were collected from the CoI survey, a follow-up focus group interview with ten randomly selected student participants, and a semi-structured interview with the instructor.Results and discussionThe results indicated that the students’ perceptions of the teaching, social, and cognitive presences were significantly higher in the smart classroom than in the “quasi smart” classroom; further, students in the smart classroom achieved significantly higher course marks than those in the “quasi smart” classroom. The pros and cons of these two different classroom environments were identified by the participating students and their course instructor.
