Review of shale gas social science in the United Kingdom, 2013–2018

Abstract: This article critically reviews social science research on unconventional hydrocarbon development in the United Kingdom. I analyse fifty research articles published over the last half decade. The articles fit into three primary categories: (1) public perceptions, (2) discourse and rhetoric, and (3) planning and regulation. This review reveals both what social scientific inquiry has taught us and what gaps remain. We have reasonable understanding of: extent of public support for and opposition to development, b… Show more

“…Alongside the mobilization of resources, enabling access to policy makers and the media, and the exploitation of political opportunities, such as regulatory failures or elections, an important skill of movements is the use of “compelling framing” (Piggot, , p. 942). The resonance of frames and the perceived effectiveness of narrative strategies have become an important focus for the literature on contests between pro‐ and anti‐fracking groups (Bomberg, ; Evensen, ; Neville et al, ). While these studies reveal numerous tailored framing strategies, they share a concern with thematic analysis of frames and counter frames, examining which frames are over‐ or underrepresented, and which frames will be most resonant with broader audiences.…”

“…Hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques for so-called unconventional hydrocarbon sources from shales, coal bed and tight sands, are a matter of growing social scientific concern (Evensen, 2018). Recent advancements in drilling technology and slickwater hydraulic fracturing of porous rocks (including shales) have allowed the profitable extraction of oil and gas from previously untapped sources (Palisch et al, 2010).…”

“…In 2011, drilling of an early exploration well led to induced seismicity which was although considered to be minor in nature but halted the operations and urged UK government to impose one-year moratorium [8]. Although this short-term moratorium was lifted in 2012, the progress in shale gas development remained at snail's pace.…”

“…As mentioned by Bradshaw and Waite [9] that in 2015, Cuadrilla (license holder company) appealed the decisions by Lancashire County Council of refusing initial planning submissions by company, leading to a public enquiry in 2016. According to Evensen [8], idea of shale gas development primarily faced political challenges over the past seven years where it remained a subject of intense debates and political speeches by advocates and opponents. Secondly, societal challenges hugely contributed to detaining shale gas development where the plans of 'fracking' by government and Cuadrilla were confronted by opposition from activists.…”
