EDM machining of Al 6061 was performed under varying conditions of pulse current and pulse duration. Graphite was used as an electrode material with distilled water and paraffin oil as two different dielectric mediums. The aim is to characterize the surface integrity produced as a result of EDM machining under both varying electrical and non-electrical parameters as it is important in determining the service life of EDM machined components. The vertical, horizontal and corner surfaces are studied independently for each single set of conditions. The average white layer thickness (AWLT) and surface roughness was found to be dependent on pulse current values and pulse duration. The dielectric medium also has an influence on the thickness and nature of white layer. It was found that the thickness and nature of the white layer formed from distilled water is different from that of paraffin oil. New methods of AWLT and surface roughness measurement through an optical microscope are described. The surface roughness method developed was calibrated against an identical surface roughness tester. Finally, material removal rate, tool wear rate, the presence of micro cracks, voids and globules were compared for different conditions and conclusions were drawn according to the actual physical conditions during machining.

Abstract-Turning is one of the most popular convectional machining processes to remove the extra material from the rotating surfaces. In this process, a wedge shaped cutting tool penetrated toward the workpiece and removed the extra material in the form of chips. Almost all known materials can be machined by this process in different forms like external turning, internal turning, plain/cylindrical turning, step turning, taper turning, face turning etc. with selection of appropriate cutting tool for particular material. The aim of the present study is to summarize a report on the turning process including present and past research works. This paper present a brief overview on turning operation considering the different aspects and focus the future scopes of works in the same area, which is beneficial for the researches who work in the same field.

-Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a thermo-electrical based non-contact material removal process for machining of the electrically conductive difficult-to-machine materials. The machinability of the EDM process is not affected by mechanical and physical properties of the workpiece materials. Even though, its performances are highly affected by the tool materials and their designs. Most of the research papers refer to enhance the productivity of the EDM process without considering the effect of the parameters related to the tool electrodes. Generally, the tool wear is the well known phenomenon of the EDM process that affects the plasma formation as well as surface quality and productivity. The aim of the present study is to summarize a report on the published works related to the tool electrodes materials, designs and their effect on the performances of the EDM process. Instead of this, the present paper also focuses to future research scope in the same field and discussed in the brief.
