Review of Power Quality Issues in Maritime Microgrids

Abstract: This paper discusses contemporary problems concerning ship microgrids. It focuses on the role of power electronics and power quality issues, both conventional, such as voltage and frequency variations, and new issues, such as waveform distortions ensuing from the wide proliferation of power electronics in ship microgrids. The paper also contains a discussion on the provisions of the Unified Requirements of International Association of Classification Societies and other leading power quality standards in the in… Show more

“…5 However, different devices sharing the power in the vessel's microgrid cause waveform distortion. 6 Besides, the heave compensation motion of the AHC contains abundant kinetic energy, which can be utilized. The kinetic energy of the AHC comes from wave energy.…”

“…These harmonics result in the total harmonic distortion (THD) level increasing and have deleterious effects on the equipment that makes up the electrical system, such as overloading, overheating, and interfering with communication networks. [9][10][11] Passive LC filters have traditionally been employed in electric utility networks to mitigate harmonic distortion's effects. However, they could have been more effective due to their drawbacks, which included a poor performance in suppressing harmonics, a large size, fixed compensation, and a resonance problem.…”

“…Assuring the quality of service (QoS) in SMGs is more difficult than that in terrestrial microgrids (MGs) [12]. Being islanded, a DC-SMG is endowed with limited power which is mainly generated by synchronous generators and FCs as the PGMs to feed the entire system.…”
