Review of petroleum sludge thermal treatment and utilization of ash as a construction material, a way to environmental sustainability

Abstract: Oil companies are largely responsible for producing a huge amount of petroleum sludge (PS), which is a major source of pollution in the environment. It is generated during oil extraction, processing, transportation, and cleaning activities. Environment Protection Act and Hazardous Wastes Handling Rules categorized petroleum sludge as hazardous waste because it consists of spent chemicals, wastewater, waste oil, mineral matter, and contaminated sand. This PS cannot be disposed of in a landfill, even after it is… Show more

“…Stabilization of petroleum wastes is performed through the addition of additives to reduce the moisture content, mobility, and toxicity levels, while solidification of PWs would remove the free liquid, increase the mechanical strength, and produce a monolithic solid product. The end product can be applied as construction materials depending on certain properties [3,8,9]. Fly ash, lime, and Portland cement are among the additives used for the S/S of petroleum waste.…”

“…The tremendous amount of wastes generated is alarmingly increasing as the production of crude oil becomes more important in time because crude oil is the sole source of energy and acts as feedstock in refineries [ 2 ]. Oily sludge is the result of several processes of the oil industry (wells drilling, crude oil pools, refining, transporting, and storage tanks) [ 3 ]. Oily sludge is a hazardous waste containing a complex mixture of different emulsified petroleum hydrocarbons, water, heavy metals, and solid particles.…”

“…The main areas of producing petroleum sludge are crude oil storage vessels and the separation of water from oil [ 23 ]. The petroleum types and sources are the main factors that influence the petroleum sludge complexity [ 28 ]. The mixture of petroleum sludge is mainly generated due to sedimentation and accumulation of crude oil in the storage tanks [ 29 ].…”
