Review of nonlinear effects under TW-power PS pulses amplification in GARPUN-MTW Ti:sapphire-KrF laser facility

Abstract: Investigations were carried out at the multistage hybrid Ti:sapphire–KrF laser facility GARPUN-MTW on the direct amplification of TW-power picosecond UV laser pulses in e-beam-pumped KrF amplifiers and propagation along a 100 m laboratory air pass. The experiments identified the main nonlinear effects and their impact on the amplification efficiency, amplifier optics degradation, beam quality and focusability, and the evolution of radiation spectra. The research was performed towards an implementation of the s… Show more

“…For this reason UV beam exhibits self-defocusing of filaments and intensity homogenization while propagating in Xe. At Xe pressure of 0.1 atm the filament diameter at the end of the cell increases by a factor 3.6 while its intensity falls down by an order of magnitude [37].…”

“…The radiation distribution in a focal plane was measured by Spiricon SP620U profiler (Ophir Photonics), while K8 glass plate was used to convert UV laser light into green fluorescence [10]. The focal distribution had a Gaussian-like symmetric central part and broad low-intensity wings, originated from a temporal evolution of laser light in the unstable resonator cavity of the laser [22].…”

“…Unfortunately, a local growth of energy density in evolving filaments significantly reduced the amplifier gain while 3-photon absorption in CaF2 windows (material of the choice) produced window degradation [9]. Also, the filamentation of powerful UV pulses in atmospheric air strongly distorted the laser beam distribution [10].…”

“…Our previous experience with GARPUN, a hybrid Ti:Sapphire/KrF laser facility [ 49 ], revealed the benefits of such combined amplification and the drawbacks when operating with a rather high peak power ~1 TW in subpicocecond pulses [ 50 ]. For these goals, a more promising method seems to include the nonlinear shortening of typical 20 ns pulses of a discharge-pumped KrF laser by Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) or Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS).…”
