Review of MR elastography applications and recent developments

Abstract: The technique of MR elastography (MRE) has emerged as a useful modality for quantitatively imaging the mechanical properties of soft tissues in vivo. Recently, MRE has been introduced as a clinical tool for evaluating chronic liver disease, but many other potential applications are being explored. These applications include measuring tissue changes associated with diseases of the liver, breast, brain, heart, and skeletal muscle including both focal lesions (e.g., hepatic, breast, and brain tumors) and diffuse … Show more

“…In contrast, simple steatosis does not result in any significant increase in stiffness [62] . The shear wave length in fibrotic liver is much longer than it is in healthy liver, and the elastograms show that fibrotic liver is much stiffer than healthy liver [63] . MRE can be performed before or after the intravenous gadolinium injections that are routinely used for liver studies.…”

“…MRE can be implemented on a conventional MR system, using modified GRE or SE sequences and adding hardware to generate the waves and software for acquisition and processing. Liver stiffness is directly related to the stage of fibrosis, increasing with the progression of the disease [53,54]. MRE has a high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing and staging of liver fibrosis and it is now considered as the best non-invasive tool to assess liver fibrosis [53].…”

“…La vitesse de propagation des ondes de pression augmente avec la rigidité du milieu traversé. Ce marqueur peut donc être utilisé pour estimer les propriétés viscoélastiques d'un tissu (Glaser et al 2012). Ce phénomène est la base de l'élastographie par IRMN, qui est une méthode validée pour la quantification de la fibrose hépatique.…”
