Review of Microplastic Pollution in the Environment and Emerging Recycling Solutions

Abstract: Microplastic pollution represents a side-effect stemming from a global plastic waste mismanagement problem and includes degraded particles or mass produced plastic particles less than 5 mm in largest dimension. The small nature of microplastics gives this area of pollution different environmental concerns than general plastic waste in the environment. The biological toxicity of particles, their internal components, and their surface level changes all present opportunities for these particles to adversely affec… Show more

“…In recent years, several studies have shown the impact of plastic microbeads on aquatic and marine environments (Barrett et al, 2020; Ng et al, 2018; Reimonn et al, 2019; Sharma and Chatterjee, 2017; Yu et al, 2018). These tiny materials, which are commonly made of PE, PP or polystyrene (PS), are used as special additives in the cosmetics and personal care products like facial cleansers.…”

“…In recent years, microplastic pollution or marine debris has aroused extensive attention and public concern worldwide (Barrett et al, 2020; Ng et al, 2018; Peixoto et al, 2019; Reimonn et al, 2019; Sharma and Chatterjee, 2017; Yu et al, 2018), thus forming internationally an environment issue (UNEP, 2018). This emerging ocean pollution originates from a variety of sources, including containers, cosmetics, clothing, bags, industrial processes and other products made of plastics.…”

“…Research outside Indonesia on the impact of waste management in general and in particular the waste of disposable diapers and sanitary napkins in particular is directed at the impact on physical health and the physical environment (Reimonn et al 2019;Prata et al 2019). Research on the impact is directed at the results of the 3 R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycling).…”

“…Microplastic is an element of plastic that is very often used by humans. The recycling process takes a long time and costs a lot (Reimonn et al 2019). This element is very dangerous for human health.…”

“…Packaging by far represents the largest end-use market [2]. Most conventional plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are non-biodegradable and their increasing accumulation in the environment has been a threat to the planet [3][4][5]. To solve the problem related to plastics pollution, with the directive UE 2019/904 [6], Europe has imposed that from 2021 some disposable packaging and products should be prohibited.…”
